Sugar Loaf Mountain Trek Attracts 170 Hikers

The Orange County Citizens Foundation hosted a hike of Sugar Loaf Mountain as a public awareness event on Saturday, June 13th. About 170 people gathered at the non-profit’s headquarters on the Seligmann Homestead in Sugar Loaf to enjoy a hayride to the trailhead and then embarked upon a moderately strenuous hike up the scenic mountain. Most participants had never heard of the non-profit advocacy group before, but most shared one common dilemma. “People told us that they had always wanted to climb the mountain but couldn’t because there is no public access,” said Nancy Proyect, President of the Citizens Foundation. “We were able to secure access for the day so people could enjoy the views and their natural environment.” Board Trustee Bob Krahulik accurately speculated that there would be a large audience of people who were intrigued to hike the mountain looming over Sugar Loaf and Warwick, so he took up the challenge to get permission for access from adjacent landowners.
